Hidden away in the woods, our Kennebunkport B&B is located on the western bank of the tidal Kennebunk River. The Bufflehead Cove Inn offers the tranquility of a peaceful setting with all of Kennebunkport’s attractions a few minutes away.

Inn History

Bufflehead Cove Inn was built in 1889 by David Clark a prominent Kennebunkport shipbuilder. Many of the inn’s features are reminiscent of the clipper ships built in the Kennebunk River during that time. The house was used as a private home until the 1950’s when a German couple first turned it into an Inn (including a traditional German beer garden!) James and Harriet purchased the property in 1972 as a private home. After a trip to Ireland, where they stayed in many traditional B&B’s, Harriet decided to turn the house into an Inn. Bufflehead Cove Bed and Breakfast opened its doors to the public in the spring of 1984.

The Innkeepers

Both Harriet and James are Kennebunkport natives. James was a commercial fisherman for almost 40 years. He lobstered out of the Kennebunk River and Cape Porpoise Harbor. Harriet opened the Inn in 1984. It was previously their home, and all three of their children grew up on the property. Their youngest son Erin took over the business in 2011 but still works closely with his parents. When not at the Inn you can find Erin tending his oyster farm in Wells and Kennebunkport. It is a true family business with Harriet’s sister Helena working as the inn’s chef and baker, Erin’s wife is the book keeper and Erin’s sister Shannon is in charge of social media.
